Multi stakeholder dialogue on watering development in SADC: beyond IWRM concepts and the converted

A SADC Multi-stakeholder Water Dialogue on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is scheduled to take place in Maputo, Mozambique from 16 to 18 May.The theme of the SADC Multi-stakeholder Water Dialogue will be “Watering development in SADC: beyond IWRM concepts and the converted”. The SADC region has now moved ‘beyond merely the concept of IWRM’ towards application of IWRM principles. Since IWRM integrates sectors – it is important to move “beyond the converted” and engage other sectors more meaningfully.

Water markets can overcome the global water crisis

The global water crisis can be solved through fair water markets. This is the main conclusion of the new publication “Pay – Establishing payments for watershed services”, to be launched on World Water Day on 22 March 2007 by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

“Markets can solve watershed degradation through investments in the sustainable management of ecosystems”, says Ger Bergkamp, Head of the IUCN Water Programme. French Vittel already invests USD 24.5 million per year to compensate farmer's reduced use of fertilizer.

Fragmented policy and Institutional frameworks threatening sustainable utilization of wetlands in the Zambezi Basin

The sustainable use of the wetlands resources in the Zambezi Basin is faced with several challenges that are partly due to the prevailing policy environment. At a recently held policy formulation training meeting in Maputo, Mozambique, World Conservation Union Zambezi Basin Wetlands Project Manager, Wilson Mhlanga, noted that most of the policies related to the management of wetlands were sectoral, thus negatively impacting on the effective management of the wetlands resources.

Angola celebrates National Environment Day

On 31 January, Angola celebrates it’s 30th annual National Environment Day. The celebrations were initiated shortly after independence in 1976 by then President Antonio Agostino Neto who convened a meeting of African Portuguese speaking countries to discuss conservation issues. Since that time, each January, the country marks their continued commitment to the environment through special workshops and. public awareness programmes.

Zimbabwe Launches Millennium Development Goals Report

September 9, 2005
Zimbabwe launched its Millennium Development Goals Report in Harare, with pledges by Government, Business and Civil society to prioritise eradicating poverty, empowering women and fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Zimbabwe President, Robert Mugabe, officially launched the report and reaffirmed his support for the 2002 Millennium Declaration endorsed by more than 190 world leaders in Johannesburg, South Africa. HIV/AIDS and Natural Resources in Southern Africa

September 9, 2005
HIV/AIDS in southern Africa is mostly affecting 15-49 year age groups. This also happens to be the most economically active group in the region. A survey carried out by the Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAFIDS) shows that Swaziland has the highest infection rate at 40 percent, while Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique are among the worst affected.
